Short Films in the Official Selection
Discover the first part of the Annecy Festival 2023’s Official Selection with the announcement of the Short Films in competition.
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival reveals the first part of the 2023 Official Selection: Short Films in competition.
This year, 71 films have been chosen across the four competitive categories, less than previous years due to films becoming increasingly longer. 41 countries have at least one film selected and for the first time ever more than half the films are directed or co-directed by women. A proportion that has been steadily rising since 2018.
The selection is distributed as follows:
- 37 in the L’officielle category
- 7 in the Off-Limits category
- 19 in the Perspectives category
- 8 in the Young Audiences category

"The Annecy 2023 short film selection stands out due to the many films dealing with female issues, especially those related to motherhood. This is a selection of films with immense storytelling ambitions and with a greater emphasis on humour than we have seen in recent years."
Marcel Jean, Artistic Director
Among the directors picked this year, two of them have already won the Cristal for a Short Film (Nienke Deutz in 2018 and Franck Dion in 2016) and three others previously won the Cristal for a Graduation Film (Tom Brown in 2007, Jenny Jokela in 2018 and Daria Kashcheeva in 2019).
Lastly, 12 short films will be eligible for the "Jean-Luc Xiberras" Award for a First Film, which rewards the best first professional film.
Tune in at the end of March to find out the next instalment of the Official Selection with the announcement of the Graduation Films, TV and Commissioned Films and then in April for the VR Works and Feature Films.
